Welcome to From the Desk of Jim McGrath

After 30 years of recruiting conversations in the mortgage industry, one thing has become very clear to me:

Most sales leaders are not struggling because they don’t WANT growth.

They’re struggling because the recruiting environment changed… and many are still trying to use yesterday’s approach in today’s market.

Over the past few months, I’ve had conversations with branch managers, recruiters, regional leaders, and executives across the country that all carried similar frustrations:

“Candidates won’t engage.”

“Managers aren’t recruiting consistently.”

“Everything starts strong but fades out.”

“Top producers seem harder to move than ever.”

And honestly?

A lot of those frustrations are real.

This market feels different because candidates are different right now.

More cautious. More skeptical. More emotionally protective of their business, relationships, and long-term stability.

They’re studying leadership longer. Watching consistency longer. Paying attention to communication, emotional stability, and vision in ways I haven’t seen at this level before.

What’s interesting is many sales leaders are still approaching recruiting like a transaction… while candidates are evaluating it like a long-term life decision.

That disconnect is creating frustration on both sides of the conversation.

That’s part of the reason I decided to start writing From the Desk of Jim McGrath.

Not recruiting theory. Not polished guru content. And not another collection of generic leadership lessons.

Just honest observations from the trenches after thousands of conversations with mortgage professionals over the years.

The frustrations leaders quietly wrestle with. The patterns companies keep repeating. And the emotional side of recruiting nobody talks about enough.

Because recruiting today is no longer just about opportunity.

It’s about trust. Consistency. Patience. Leadership visibility. And relationship equity built over time.

No fluff.

Just real commentary from a headhunter who has spent three decades in the middle of it.
